Date: 2016-04-19 06:01 am (UTC)I actually haven't read anything in the magazine other than the DT/CT stuff. Well, I haven't read the episode previews for the TDAs, because I don't want anything that might resemble a spoiler. I'll read them after. :) I used to have an online subscription to DWM for a year, but I found it to be rather uninteresting, sadly.

Date: 2016-04-19 07:44 pm (UTC)Technically, he's been west of the Mississippi, as St. Louis is on the west bank of the river. (You may now slap me for being pedantic.) But he really needs to come to the West Coast or the mountain states. I keep hoping beyond hope that he'll come to Gallifrey One, but I know that will never happen - Gally can't afford him.
(I'm not even sure he's done any cons since he left DW until he did the Raleigh con last year. I'm glad that he's getting back out to meet his fans.)

Date: 2016-04-20 06:21 am (UTC)(I wondered if he stopped partly because of some fangirls getting too rabid. Thankfully it sounds like the law took care of them, and he has other things to promote. GOOD things.)

Date: 2016-04-21 12:15 am (UTC)Well, it could be that he stopped because he's just been soooo busy. But I have another theory. I believe his daughter was born in 2010, or right around then anyway, and I think he chose to stay home for her.

Every time I see he's gone on the schedule for one of these events I debate with myself. It's not so much the distance, though the plane fare tends to be ridiculous; but then besides the cost of the signing/photo (which is, well, you know *whistles*), there's a hotel room which is always another hundred dollars or more for probably multiple nights since the travel time to the east coast means needing to add an extra day on either end, and hey, food, and the fact that I am probably interested at nothing else at this con so now I've spent a lot of money on what, exactly? and in the end I wind up concluding I just can't conscience spending $1000 or more on this kind of thing. Being at least west of the Plains somewhere would mitigate several of these factors.

Date: 2016-04-21 07:11 pm (UTC)I completely agree! I had the same reservations about going to Raleigh. When they announced he'd be there, it was two weeks before the event, which meant the airfare was even more expensive than usual and I had no idea if I'd be able to get a hotel anywhere near the con - and that would have added either car rental or taxi fees. (Luckily, I got a hotel right across the street.) Then I would have get days off from work. Considering all that, there was no way I was going to do it and I was very disappointed, but I tried to hide it. However, I am very blessed first, to have disposable income and second, to have a husband who, when I mentioned in passing that DT was doing a con, immediately told me that I was going to go and he wasn't hearing otherwise. I told him I wasn't and detailed all the reasons against it (not to mention, jeez, stalk much??) and he just said, "You're going. Go make the reservations now." He is the best husband in the world.
I absolutely loved getting to meet DT (he is honestly the sweetest man), but you're very right about the con having nothing else for me. With the huge lines for getting into the DT events, I didn't have the time to attend any other panel or event, but there actually wasn't a single one that I was interested in. The only things I ended up doing at the con was walking through the dealer room and taking pictures of cosplayers. I also just didn't like the atmosphere of the con, with them just basically herding us through the lines and events. "VIP Experience", my denim-clad butt! I do highly recommend going to subject-focused cons, though, like Harry Potter or Doctor Who. I went to Gallifrey One this past February for the first time, and every second of it was wonderful.
The other DT thing I did was go to Victoria when he was filming Gracepoint, and though I didn't get to meet him there, that was far more rewarding than the Raleigh con. It took quite a bit for me to track down where the filming was and I was very lucky - he happened to filming an outdoor scene the day I was there, so I got to see him pass by dressed as Emmett Carver and watch the actual filming - but the rest of it, visiting Victoria and getting to know the town, was just wonderful.

Date: 2016-04-19 07:59 pm (UTC)Still, you're right, he needs to see the rest of the country, including the Midwest and further west! Although he just recently was in St. Louis and Madison, a good start...
