I threatened to meme my way through my journal in my last entry, so here it is. I got this meme from
purplecat, who got it from the meme originator,
trobadora, who put it together from a number of other memes, thus the name, Frankenstein's Meme". I am using it in the same way that Trobadora used it, to get myself posting again (and not about work stuff). I doubt I'll do this every day, but I will my best to finish it. So here goes.
Question 1: What's changed about your fandom life in the last 365 days?
This is actually really hard to say. A year ago, we were still in the first stretch of COVID lockdown, about the time when people were really starting to complain that the government was being too strict - they weren't dead, after all, so why should they be forbidden from going out andspreading the pandemic socializing as they saw fit? Not much has changed on that front.
My fandom life has been pretty low for a while now, with a greatly reduced amount of writing and only the barest minimum of keeping up with Doctor Who on LJ and DW. It didn't help that the show had already been on break when the pandemic started, so there was no new season likely to come for a while. So, really, the only change in my fandom life was that it was totally killed by the problems at work, which exhausted me and stifled my creativity. I'm trying to recover now, and I expect it'll be slow.
We are in the middle of a rewatch of the modern show, though we started that months ago and keep getting stuck on episodes we don't like. Right now, we're stuck on "Voyage of the Damned", not because we dont like it, but because it requires changing the disc from the end of series 3 to the beginning of series 4. That is how lazy we are. We had intended on watching all of series 2 including the Trifecta of Suck ("The Idiot's Lantern", "Fear Her", and "Love & Monsters"), but we got stuck on "The Impossible Planet"/"The Satan Pit", a story that neither of us understand or enjoy. After procrastinating on that for two months, we finally gave up and just jumped to the end of the season. (It's a bit disappointing, because I had actually been looking forward to "Fear Her". I haven't seen it in years, but my recollection is that the episode is actually pretty good if you ignore the thing with the Doctor and the torch and the ending with girl's father coming back out of her drawing. It's a great example of how a story can be ruined by adding extraneous nonsense.)
I haven't picked up any new fandoms that I know of. We have watched new shows in the past year, but nothing that captured my heart, not like DW or Good Omens. I did finally read Warbreaker and that was amazing (Lightsong and Scoot are the best...), but I am actively resisting falling headlong into the Cosmere because I just can't commit to reading that much. Though Mistborn keeps whispering in my ear...

- Squicks - What are some things that squick you in fandom - not necessarily "icky", though it can be. From anything involving blood, to bad grammar.
- What's the hardest thing about writing, and why are titles the Worst™?
- Do you have a fandom that you follow - either regularly or casually - with little to no knowledge of canon?

- A pairing – platonic, romantic or sexual – that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.
- What was the first thing you ever contributed to a fandom?
- Do you remember your first OTP? Who was in it?

- How many fandoms have you written for? How many have you been in, and how many are you still in?
- Has social media caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
- What fandom broke your heart?
- Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you dislike or even loathe.)

- Your rarest fandoms.
- A fandom you’ve abandoned and why.
- Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?

Date: 2021-09-09 08:12 am (UTC)I laughed, because yes. Especially when you're low, but I think we all get a bit like that sometimes. I'd have to switch to another tab on the net, go downstairs to fetch the next disc!

Why do I feel like it’s not the only one

Date: 2021-09-11 06:52 pm (UTC)I remember watching "Fear Her" for the first time and feeling embarrassed for DT for having to do the torch scene. It was so stupid that I felt bad that he'd had to film it. But yes, I'm sure there are plenty of otherwise great stories ruined by stupidity. "Love & Monsters" is one of them, actually. The whole first half of the episode, the life of a fan and Elton's relationship with Jackie, were really good, and then the Abzorbaloff appeared and that was the end of it.
